Wandering all around on the streets with a deteriorating medical condition, looking for a piece of the loaf with eyes that can’t be opened, Cotton the cat had never imagined for a second chance in life. The eyes heavily damaged by the mange, a skin disease caused by parasitic mites, made it toilsome for him to scavenge for food. He was completely on the mercy of strangers who would go near a scabbed cat?
With death knocking on the door, starving &disease-ridden cat felt hopeless. However, his fate had a different plan for her. Her savior took him in. She placed him under her custody and gave him all the care he needed. Here are a few photographs to display the poignant condition she found him in.
The one who came to the rescue was Carmen Morales Weinberg, founder of Animal Friends Project Inc. She was appalled by the condition she found Cotton in. “He couldn’t even see or open his eyes because the mites were so bad”, stated Carmen in an interview with The Dodo. “It must have been so scary for him out there not being able to see. He was all alone and so skinny because he couldn’t find food.”
But how did poor Cotton found her savior? It’s another interesting story mentioned in the Facebook post of Weinberg. Cotton was found on September 12th,2016 in Royal Palm Beach, FL by a man named Joe. The cat came out of nowhere and started eating from a bowl of food he was trying to give to his cat. He was able to put in a cat carrier and post for help. After Joe posted a plea in a local group on Facebook, no one was able to help. Carmen came across the post through a friend and she just couldn’t say no.
That is how Carmen got in touch with Cotton.
Luckily enough Carmen’s house had a separate bathroom to quarantine Cotton which was previously used to shelter a mommy cat. It seemed as if all forces in nature worked together to place a meeting between Carmen & cotton.
After giving refuge to the cat, she took him to his vet, Justin Bartlett Animal Hospital. She discovered Cotton was friendly as he started purring the vet that examined him. Later on, she cleaned him up thoroughly with a medicated soap and treated her illness with creams, coconut oil & various antibiotics. She kept on supplying him the diet rich in nutrition. After some time, the cat started to show the sign of recovery. “We could just see his tense body start to relax as the days passed,” she said. “He was finally able to rest without scratching so much.”
Not only Carmen but her family too assisted the poor stranded cat. They fully supported Carmen in her decision to shelter a cat dealing with illness. The family wholeheartedly took the cat under their wings.
“My husband Don, son Carlos and daughter Elisa, are used to dealing with cats with many illnesses and we knew that if we took some precautions, that we could still touch and love Cotton to help him heal.”
But after tremendous efforts, Magic happened!
Cotton was gradually sensing the help she was getting from her Mom. He too did her part by letting her do so. The mutual understanding and attachment between them were growing. And the day came when Cotton finally opened her eyes. The efforts of Carmen all bore fruits and Cotton was finally able to see the world with a fully functional eye set. His sight became clearer and the scabs came off. Initially when they came off, Cotton used to get irritated but eventually, the scratching stopped.
Cotton kept on recuperating. The recovery signs were fabulous. “Little by little he started to gain weight. It was a nice surprise to see that he had one blue eye and one yellow eye. His hair started to grow again.” Here are some post recover clicks of Cotton. Get ready to get stupefied!!
Cotton today has become a phenomenon. His amazing story of the fight with illness has grabbed massive attention among the public. His majestic eyes are the current hot topic of the town. He, however, has not forgotten the debt of his Mom & the bond between them keep getting stronger with the day.
“He is very attached to me and follows me around all day. If I go to my bedroom and close the door, he cries and cries until I come back and he can see me. Same going to the bathroom,” Carmen said in an interview with LoveMeow. “His personality has changed over time. He used to not have a lot of patience when touched. He is much more affectionate now. He gives me kisses and comes looking for attention often.” So, did you enjoyed the story of angelic-eyed Cotton and his willingness to fight on? Have you ever adopted a stranded animal?
